Hailar River

Hailar, China

In an area once roamed by Genghis Khan, preservation of Inner Mongolia’s iconic grasslands requires long-term strategic planning efforts. With booming population growth, continual pressures on the extremely fragile grasslands require the creation and development of new modern prairie cities for the next generations of herdsmen. The simple formula of retiring herdsmen with the next generation following in their footsteps has resulted in a phenomenon where the progressive desertification of the grasslands is imminent. Working with the Inner Mongolia Grassland Culture Protection and Development Foundation, Norris Design created a strategic master plan that included the creation of enlivened new villages and cities in this region to provide viable retirement options for herdsmen and alternative employment options for future generations who choose a path in life very different from their predecessors.
