Our People
Norris Design has steadily grown to a staff of over 90 talented and motivated Planners, Landscape Architects, Entitlement Specialists and Graphic Designers. We are recognized as creative and conscientious design professionals, the go-to firm that gets projects approved and built. We plan carefully, communicate effectively, and improve continuously by learning from each project.
 
 

John Norris, ASLA | Principal
As founding Principal, John oversees the landscape architectural operations of the firm. His design solutions are noted for being bold statements that are strikingly unique yet completely functional for the ultimate users and their needs. John’s work has brought local and national acclaim to the company.


 

Mitch A. Black | Principal
As co-director of Planning, Mitch provides design leadership for a variety of projects. These include master planned, amenity-based and large lot communities where mixed land uses, open space, preservation zones, vehicular and pedestrian circulation systems and civic features all combine to form various centers within neighborhoods and communities. 


  
 

Sean Malone, ASLA | Principal
As principal in charge of technology, Sean keeps Norris Design on the forefront of technological capability. As a landscape architect, he manages planning, design, construction documentation and construction administration. His project experience includes large community planning, site planning, landscape design and special services.


 
 

Diana R. Rael | Principal
As co-director of Planning, Diana is a design team leader on a multitude of large scale projects including master planned and golf course communities, neighborhood design, plan processing and development coordination. Diana’s success with the home building and development industry has brought regional recognition to the firm.


 
 

Doug Craig, ASLA | Principal
A well traveled and broadly experienced landscape architect, Doug is responsible for all aspects of project development on a variety of projects from concept planning through construction services. He is highly experienced in commercial, resort and residential design throughout Colorado and the western United States as well as a variety of projects internationally.


 
 

Jon Seier, CLARB | Principal
Jon has emerged as an expert in mixed-use/TOD projects through the development of distinctive places integrating office, retail and residential components of a project. He is also experienced with parks and recreational facilities and resort projects. Jon believes in the incorporation of natural elements into the built environment to serve cost effective, aesthetic and environmental purpose in the development of functional spaces.  


 
 

John C. Durham | Principal
As a seasoned land planner specializing in policy, processing and coordination, John has extensive local government approval experience in annexations, rezoning and land development/entitlement applications. In addition, he manages large, multi-disciplinary teams for complex and sometimes controversial development projects.


 
 

John M. Birkey, ASLA | Principal
John has been responsible for the design of a number of municipal parks and recreation centers, trails and natural areas, residential communities, commercial and retail sites. He also plays an important and unique role as a professional photographer whose services are offered in-house at Norris Design supporting our visual communications services.
 
 
 
 
 
Carla Smart | Principal
A long term office manager of Norris Design, Carla oversees the complex day-to-day operations of the company. She is responsible for the financial, payroll, benefits and human resource aspects of the firm making her role critical to the ongoing success of the firm.


 
 

Mark Kieffer, AICP | Principal
Mark brings 20 years of experience working in community development throughout Colorado. His expertise includes a broad range of projects including urban design, historic preservation, downtown revitalization, large-scale land development and State and Federal Permitting processes. Having authored several land use ordinances, design standards, and master plans, he has developed a comprehensive understanding of how the entitlement process in different jurisdictions operate.
 

 
Stacey Weaks, ASLA, CLARB | Principal
Located in our Tucson office, Stacey is a landscape architect experienced in land use vision planning, community planning, urban design, site planning, and interpretive/ sustainable landscape design. He has been involved in residential, commercial and educational projects where his responsibilities included facilitation of public consensus building for land use planning and transportation projects, managing and coordinating the design process from proposal through project implementation.
 
Keith Demchinski | Principal
Leading our Chicago office, Keith’s experience in the land development process includes community planning, master planning, design guidelines and streetscape plans, feasibility analysis, and urban design. He has been an integral part of preparing PUD, zoning, and complex annexation submittals for various mixed-used developments throughout the Midwest and recently, his focus has been on the planning of pedestrian-friendly, innovative, traditional neighborhood designs.
 
 

 
 

Wendi J. Birchler | Principal
Wendi has been practicing landscape architecture and land planning disciplines for over ten years. She has extensive experience in managing large, multi-disciplinary development project teams. Her responsibilities have included overall project management, entitlement processing, development of schedules, coordinating City/County submittal packages, and coordinating and facilitating public meetings. Her project experience includes TOD design, commercial, retail, mixed-use, single and multi-familiy residential, office and hospital campuses.
 
 
 
 
 
Joshua M. Orth | Principal
Josh Orth's primary focus is in construction administration as it relates to landscape architecture projects. He brings to the company a background in landscape construction, excellent relationships within the industry and an understanding of the entire construction process. This experience contributes to finding value for owners in their projects and helping contractors realize their full potential during installation.

  

 

John Overstreet | Principal
John Overstreet brings twenty years of experience working with public sector parks and recreation providers, teaching sports management at the collegiate level, as well as consulting with agencies across North America. John’s expertise provides unique comprehensive park, recreation, facility and open space planning and design services.
