January 31, 2013

Sentinel Plaza was honored by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) at the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas with the Innovation Award for NAHB’s category Best 50+ Affordable Rental Community. LRD, an architecture and planning firm in Tucson, AZ, was recognized for its design of Sentinel Plaza Senior Living in downtown Tucson. The Innovation Award is NAHB’s premier Best of 50+ Award, awarded solely by the judges to a project which truly stands out from the crowd. Only three given out at the ceremony on January 23, 2013.

Sentinel Plaza is an independent senior living community that provides 143 one bedroom apartments for low income seniors in Tucson, AZ. The project adopts simple detailing and the thick planar walls typical of architecture in the southwest. The design also includes elements that date from the Spanish Colonial period, such as wrought iron railings, deep set windows and shade structures. Certified LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council, residents save 28% energy costs alone. Use of non-toxic products and efficient air filtration systems create a healthy environment for the residents. “At Sentinel Plaza, we have energy efficient, water efficient and healthy homes for our seniors,” says Rich Franz-Under, Green Building Program Manager for Pima County.
