John Norris, Norris Design, Kansas State University, K State, Alumni Association Fellows

Congratulations to John Norris Becoming A Kansas State Fellow

April 15, 2015

The K-State Alumni Fellows Program, sponsored by the Deans Council, the President's Office and the Alumni Association, recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers.

Since 1983, the program has brought successful alumni back to campus to meet with students and faculty and share their expertise in the classroom and at informal settings.

Fellows are chosen by each college to return as distinguished guests and as mentors, friends and counselors. They are honored in recognition of the ultimate measure of a university – not curricula, facilities or programs, but the quality of its alumni.

John Norris was honored to become the 2015 Alumni Fellow for the College of Architecture, Planning and Design.

After graduating from K-State in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture, John Norris was drawn to the Denver area and began his career in landscape architecture. His natural optimistic and entrepreneurial spirit led him to start his own firm, Norris Design, as a 26-year-old in 1985. Soon afterward, Norris began to have success in helping his clients achieve value through his attentiveness to both service and his creative solutions to their projects.

Norris Design quickly became one of the largest planning and landscape architectural practices in the western half of the United States. Under Norris’ leadership, the firm has expanded into Tucson, Phoenix, Chicago, Frisco and Austin. As an outgrowth of his natural entrepreneurial spirit, Norris has renovated, owned and occupied three different buildings in downtown Denver. He’s also a key leader in the development of two successful geo-spatial software companies that are revolutionizing how land based assets are managed.

Norris married Kristin Fionda Norris ’81, a K-State graduate in electrical engineering, shortly after he moved to Colorado. Their three children have all attended K-State. Joseph ’10 is a water attorney, and Susan ’12 is a math teacher, both in the Denver area. Aaron is a senior in communications at K-State and is anticipating graduation in May and pursuing a career in sales.
