National Intern Day!!!

Posted on July 25, 2019

Happy National Intern Day and a huge thank you to our Summer 2019 crew! We’ve loved having you. Learn more about each of Norris Design’s awesome summer interns below:

  • What’s your major? Landscape Architecture
  • Why did you choose Norris Design’s Phoenix office? K-State has a great relationship with Norris. Many of our students work there after graduating and they always have very positive experiences. That was a major factor in choosing, but I also love the diversity in project types that the firm works on.
  • What’s one thing you’ve learned so far? Working with xrefs was a first for me. We’ve never used them in school projects, and they are life changing.
  • Fun Fact? I love roller derby and have played on a local team in Kansas and Nebraska for almost six years.

  • What’s your major? Landscape Architecture
  • Why did you choose Norris Design’s Frisco office? I wanted to be as close as possible to the mountains and all the natural beauty Colorado has to offer. Also, I found it inspiring to work in an office of mostly women!
  • What’s one thing you’ve learned so far? The importance of site visits and how nice it can be to do work outside of the office.
  • Fun Fact? Before moving out here, I had never been to Colorado before.

  • What’s your major? Architecture
  • Why did you choose Norris Design’s Phoenix office? Growing up in a saturated swampy terrain, I chose ND Phoenix to give me a different perspective on extreme environmental conditions. ND, being a landscape architecture firm that offers a multitude of design services, will allow me to direct my Architectural, Urban Planning, and Marketing skills into a future career.
  • What’s one thing you’ve learned so far? Dry heat is much more pleasant than wet heat. (On a real note) I have learned that, although flooding conditions do not occur as often as other places, even in a desert, a designer has to provide for heavy floods during potential monsoons.
  • Fun Fact? I order my margaritas half frozen/half on the rocks, because it saves you time from internal indecisiveness and also allows for the perfect consistency.

  • What’s your major? Landscape Architecture
  • Why did you choose Norris Design’s Denver office? I wanted to experience working with a great firm with multiple disciplines, and being close to the mountains is definitely a great incentive too!
  • What’s one thing you’ve learned so far? I’ve been able to explore the different facets of the Landscape Architecture discipline, and I’ve also been able to better understand the inner operations of a business in the design field.
  • Fun Fact? I like pottery!

  • What’s your major? Landscape Architecture
  • Why did you choose Norris Design’s Austin office? I love this city. Good food, funky people, beautiful landscape.
  • What’s one thing you’ve learned so far? I’ve learned how to use Land F/X (beginner level not advanced)!
  • Fun Fact? I like to bake. 😊

  • What’s your major? Landscape Architecture
  • Why did you choose Norris Design’s Tucson office? I am interested in learning from a firm with a diverse portfolio primarily based in the Tucson basin.  This gives me the opportunity to see completed projects in my home town designed by local experts. Norris also has a lot of large scale, publicly accessible projects which also aligns with my interest in the field of landscape architecture.
  • What’s one thing you’ve learned so far? The pace of a project varies greatly through all the phases. It reminds me of when you are trying to buy or sell real estate, there is a lot of rushing to deadlines and then waiting. There is an art to balancing projects with different timelines.
  • Fun Fact? When I moved from Portland, OR to Tucson with my family in 2017, I had no idea that I would be pursuing a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture. After completing my first year at U of A and interning at Norris this summer, I cannot imagine doing anything else.

  • What’s your major? Landscape Architecture & Environmental Studies
  • Why did you choose Norris Design’s Denver office? The collaborative community it fosters was immediately appealing and was an obvious source of the great projects produced here. I was eager to see how I could learn in that type of supportive environment. And oh, how I have learned so much so quickly!
  • What’s one thing you’ve learned so far? The small details in the process of how a design begins — from a client reaching out all the way to site checks (which I had the honor of a doing a 6+ hour site visit of counting every plant).
  • Fun Fact? I am from South Florida and after four years of school, I am still not used to Wisconsin winters. ☹

  • Where do you go to school? University of Georgia
  • What’s your major? Landscape Architecture
  • Why did you choose Norris Design’s Denver office? Decisions like these are always hard, but what made Norris an easy choice was the people. I was confident that no matter what I’d be working on, I’d have kind and talented coworkers to lean on and learn from.
  • What’s one thing you’ve learned so far? I have learned so much already! My CAD abilities have doubled in speed, I now know a completely new way to render in Photoshop, and I’m able to do a little planning and lotting, and I learned to use the blueberry marker for shadows.
  • Fun Fact? I am a member of the Equestrian Team at UGA!
